Chapter Thirty-three
Wesley drew back from his kitchen window as Tara approached the office next door.
She was a strong, active girl, but there was more to her strength than just the physical. Heâd seen her terrified when she fell over the cliff, afraid on the lake when they overturned. It would have been funny if Tara hadnât been so frightened. The weird luminescent blob weaving on the deck was a prank to beat all pranks. Heâd never figured out for sure who pulled the stunt. Probably one of the younger guests trying to scare them. Someone much too full of unspent energy.
He liked determination in a woman even when she was afraid. Heâd seen the gentleness in her spirit when she dealt with Jill during the episode of the snakes. She was pushy, but only in her work. Her stick-straight blond hair was thick and beautiful. What would it be like unbraided, to fly free and loose?
He hoped she wouldnât decide to work from the office. Since this foolishness started, heâd had enough interruptions. He didnât need any distractions from Tara Layneâs direction. Not if he wanted to get his plans accomplished. She needed to leave before she got hurt.
Should he go over to the office? Stop her from searching his desk? From finding the envelope that contained hisâ¦
Wesley caught a movement from his left. Jill crept around the corner of the office building and was slipping â the only word to describe her actions â up to the door. Her manner was so furtive, Wesley almost smiled.
Now Jill was a gorgeous girl. He wasnât as dense as some people thought. He knew she found him attractive and was infatuated with him. But he wasnât going to play that game. Jill, almost twelve years his junior, was way too young. She needed someone more her own age. Like Sam, an enterprising young man.
Wesley jerked his attention back to the statue-like figure of Jill leaning against the door. Her dramatic move to fling it open caused him to chuckle. Who did she think she was? A modern-day Sherlock Holmes?
Jill didnât enter the office but stood in the doorway, posed in one of her classically annoyed stances. Probably sharing her caustic tongue with Tara. Wesley laughed.
Tara.
Jill.
Two beautiful women.
He just hoped neither one got in the way.
